PROJECT: JOURNEY MAGAZINE - ILLUSTRATED CARIBBEAN RUM MAP
CLIENT: HEARST CONTENT AGENCY
Journey is the travel magazine produced by Hearst Content Agency for Princess Cruises
OBJECTIVE
I was briefed by Tanita Montgomery, Creative Director at Hearst, to produce an illustrated map of the Caribbean Islands with a highly distinctive flavour - namely to incorporate a selection of Rums that famously originate from the area!
The project combines 2 of my favourite things to illustrate - maps and hand-drawn lettering - so this was a really enjoyable commission…
The illustration needed to be designed in such a way that it would allow for text panels containing details of the specially selected Rums, in and around the individual islands where each one is produced. This is the final double page spread, with content added in-house by Hearst.
Pictured below is my initial draft version of the map, for approval before completing the full illustration. I had been provided with a basic version of the proposed layout, to give me an idea of how much text to allow for and roughly where it might be positioned. I included sketched versions of each rum bottle along with relevant ingredients and worked up one of the bottles for approval on my proposed style. As you can see the colours were also tweaked a little in the final version.
CLIENT FEEDBACK
“I loved working with Carys to create a map of the Caribbean for our Hearst Content Agency client Princess Cruises. I found her work on Instagram and knew that it was a perfect fit for what our client needed for their summer issue of Journey magazine – a map that represented the geography but also the details and reasons why particular destinations would resonate with their customers. I’m really happy with the final result, as was the client!”
