PROJECT: PENDINAS ACCESS MAP
CLIENT: ROYAL COMMISSION ON THE ANCIENT AND HISTORICAL MONUMENTS OF WALES (RCAHMW)
The Pendinas Project is an 18-month project, launched in March 2023, focused on the great Iron Age hillfort of Pendinas which dominates Cardigan Bay at Aberystwyth. This is a National Lottery Heritage Fund and Cadw-funded partnership project between Dyfed Archaeological Trust and the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales working closely with the community of Penparcau and relying on the support and enthusiasm of local volunteers.
As part of the project, various community activities are planned, including archaeological excavation, working with local wildlife experts to clear bracken and gorse and improve the hilltop site for the rare plants, birds, small mammals, insects and other invertebrates that have a home on the slopes of Pendinas, which is also Penparcau’s Local Nature Reserve. Archaeological work will include geophysical surveys and excavation to uncover further information on the structure and historical use of the site.
OBJECTIVE
To create a simplified access map of Pendinas Hillfort and Local Nature Reserve, with the neighbouring suburbs of Penparcau and Trefechan (Aberystwyth)
The main purpose of the map is to provide clear directions for local people and visitors on how to access the hillfort and the Local Nature Reserve. It is intended to clearly show the hillfort and Wellington Monument, access points to the Nature Reserve, footpaths, cycle paths, as well as highights of local wildlife. It was also important that text labels should be bilingual in Welsh and English.
The map is to be used on a range of heritage interpretation and publication materials to be produced by RCAHMW and their project partners. There are also plans to create a number of exhibition panels to display the map in local schools and the Penparcau Community Centre.
